Raised in the fields of Wiltshire 24 years ago, Gabby is making waves in the London music scene. She is instantly recognisable as the girl with the petite frame, mane of red hair and the vocal ability of a lioness. Classically trained, Gabby was one of the youngest members to be invited to join the National Youth Choir, she also played double bass in her college Orchestra.
Her diverse musical tastes include pop, rock, jazz, funk, blues and experimental. She is equally at home singing in jazz clubs, pubs, music festivals or even the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican, as she did with Al Stewart on his last two UK tours!
In 2004, she toured the US to great acclaim and rave reviews. She has also toured the UK and Europe, and has been busy performing at Festivals during the summer. In the meantime, she now lives in London and performs there to sell out houses either solo or with her new band, “And Other Animals”, as well as running twice weekly acoustic and full band nights for up and coming acts. The Band, “And Other Animals” came together during the last year. Some of the newest members have only played their first full gig at the sell out evening at Union Chapel in February- which is a great feat for any signed band- let alone a relatively unknown one that ran the night themselves!
In July 2006 she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, right in the middle of recording her debut album, “Mole”. Apart from the horror of contracting a relatively rare cancer at the age of 22, the overriding worry was that the surgery could damage her vocal chords. The surgeon worked wonders, and her voice now seems to be better than ever.
To quote a fan “On the scale of things, Gabby Young’s voice is way off the scale. In fact, there aren’t any scales broad enough for a vocal range that would melt marble at a hundred paces……..Her commanding stage presence has earned Gabby a fan base that spans a range of musical genres, from urban folk to antifolk, acoustic trip to jazz”
Gabby Young is proud of the fact that she has filled venues by word of mouth and hard work. She is completely independent and has come thus far without the backing of any major label, manager, booking agents and promoters. She is inspired by Ani DiFranco, who has become an international success off her own back and is she hoping to become an inspiration to other artists wanting to do the same.
